Office Business Unit
- Multifunction devices: demand increased, but sales remained the same due to lack of demand for monochrome models.
- High-speed continuous-feed printers: solid sales
- Laser printers: decreased sales
- Overall for Quarter 1 through 3: Sales increased 2.4% to $13,889 million year on year, operating profit increased 7.4% to $2,004 million
Imaging System Business Unit
- Digital Cameras: demand and sales decreased, but sales of high-added-value models grew maintaining Canon's market share
- Inkjet printers: no change in sales level
- Overall for Quarter 1 through 3: Sales decreased 8.9% to $8,633 million year on year, operating profit decreased 3.8% to $1,251 million
Industry and Others Business Unit
- Semiconductor and FPD lithography equipment: sales increased, due to increased demand for smartphones and tablets which are manufactured using this equipment.
- Overall for Quarter 1 through 3: Sales increased 10.1% to $2,588 million year on year, operating loss of $138 million (due to heavy investment in future technology)
Net Income
Net sales and cost of sales decreased, leading to an increase in gross profit of 2.8% totaling $12,352,826 thousand.
Selling, general and administrative expenses increased, but R&D expenses decreased resulting in an 8.7% increase in operating profit for a total of $2,431,376 thousand.
The overall impact on net income after tax (less net income attributable to non-controlling interests) was a 12.3% increase or a total of $1,712,908 thousand.
